Can you say wind? - huge, gusty, completely abnormal fierce wind! Well, that’s the kind of weather we have been having here for three days in a row now.  Hardly any rain in the forecast, but seas with 7 and 8 foot rolling swells that far too often have angry white caps atop them. We had to drive to Bocastown in that incredible weather on Tuesday to finish our boat license course (click here for more on that crazy ride).

Even born and bred locals are talking about the crazy winds that don’t stop day or night. It’s a great feeling out at the end of our main wharf here on Dolphin Bay at midnight - almost being blown into the sea and listening to the intensity of the sounds and feeling the fierceness of nature.

Truly powerful the natural world.

We had blankets on the bed the last two nights and I’m considering putting on long pants and even socks today; both of which I rarely wear for the weather we usually get here in Bocas del Toro.

If you like weather, you’ll love Bocas del Toro! Perfect Caribbean tropical island sunshine and fresh breezes one day. Then intense lightning storms across the bay in the evening, with a light drizzle a la London, England to wake up to in the morning. By midday you are back to fresh breezes, some cloudcover to keep back the tropical sunshine and yet another day of surprises with the weather.

I lived in Calgary, Canada for a while and they used to say - ‘Don’t like the weather? Wait 10 minutes it will change’… I think the same can be said for the weather in Bocas del Toro, though you may have to wait a little longer and there will certainly not be any freezing rain or blanketing snow.

Any place that does not get snow in the forecast is ok by me!!!! I’m more than content with anything else - it makes for some wonderful atmoshpere shifts - from New England by the sea in October to the Bahamas anytime, to late spring in southern Ontario… and that’s just one day!!
