Well, after three months of waiting and many hours spent counting all the cash that was going to roll in to help cover costs of originally cleaning and prepping land for sale in Phase Three by planting corn there, the guessing begins. It’s picked and drying as I write this and I am skeptical that we will truly realize such lofty gains - It ain’t no 100 sacks… not even 50.

My holy shit what a waste of time and energy guesstimate is going on record as 25 - 30 sacks max. - Well below the 100 sack estimate from my right arm, Sylvano, when we’d cleaned up the area and checked it out as a possible way to get more mileage out of the same required task.

Too bad none of you can come by cabin 2 and view the pile of corn and offer their own guesses as to the number of dried, cleaned and bagged 100 pound sacks of corn that ly drying there. They used to do such things with gumballs and fish in the old days. No longer though.

…Indeed the corn harvest may be a net loss in the end (except for all that corn I guess), as I may have actually added to the overall costs of prepping Phase Three by trying to offset them - ain’t farming a kick in the pants some days?

The plus is that we will get rid of most of the corn to nearby neighbours who have already put in orders. The rub is not one of having no market; everyone buys sacks of corn.  The problem is they only pay about $15 a sack when buying 100 lbs at a time. Though for the retailer it is better as they can then sell for 20 cents a pound and are guaranteed a return.

Lesson 1 - Micro-economics: Always be sure the fellow you are getting info from about the local corn market understands the subtle nuainces of wholesaling and retailing and how the grower can not get $20 for a 100 lb sack just because the fellow and his friends buy corn at the store and pay $1 for five pounds.

Lesson 2: Biology: grow more plantain… seems they call it green gold round these parts for good reason. Recently our plantain and banana grove became cost free to maintain, as sale of the fruit is now beginning to covers costs. Now, dat’s what I’m talkin’ bout!
