I just came back from mother’s day celebration in Bocatorito a little village close to us.
In Panama we celebrate this day on December 8th. It is a very important event here, but I had been always a non enthusiastic person when it comes to days that celebrate this or that.
Anyway I found myself in this event and WOW! What a surprise! For the first time in my life I felt the core essence of what this day is all about. A day when you really feel loved and special, but not with expensive gifts and going out for dinner in fancy restaurants. Here, surrounded by humble people I understood and felt the joy of being celebrated as a mother.

It was at the school dining area - a big bohio with wood stove and some rough cut wood chairs. In this rustic place with a million dollar view out over Dolphin Bay, Panama, they honored us with beautiful guitar songs, the kids did theater with original plays created for us, along with traditional dances and gifts.

The men of the community cooked for us - a very delicious meal made on a simple wood stove, that gave the food a special touch that only wood can give. After today, Swanny is considering putting a permanent wood cooker in the garden behind the lounge. They also made a coconut sweet roll that tasted better than any fancy dessert made in a European bakery. And they gave us the most important thing of all. They made each one of us feel loved and appreciated - like we are the most important people in the world for having the gift of bringing life to this world.
Zuul was happy, all the kids hugging him and wanting to hold him. Me? Having a perfect day just enjoying my mother’s privileged role. I want every day like this! And as if it can’t get any better, my loving Swanny gave me a wonderful massage with coconut oil made here with our very own cocos!!
Only on a bay filled with dolphins would I imagine listening to vinyl records played on an old hand crank player while receiving the best gift of all - Love! This energy is contagious and so I want to wish a happy mothers day to all and pass on someof the love I received today!
Well I am going to get ready for Zuul’s night-night time. He is having for a dinner a big delicious fish that Alexia caught at the end of our dock.
Tomorrow we are making Johnny Cakes over a wood fire and a huge amount of things made of banana…. we have bananas pouring from our ears right now. Maybe tomorrow I will post our recipes for some of what we made.

Luna,
What a beautiful story. It is especially significant for me because yesterday, December 9th was my son’s birthday. I spent the whole day with him and his girlfriend and it was wonderful. Every year I recount the birth of my children to them on their birthday so that I can remind them how special it is to have them in my life. I tell them what the day was like the day they were born, what their dad and I were doing etc. They never tire of hearing it. It is truly a wonderful experience for those of us who are fortunate enough to have children.
I am so happy you shared this day with us. By the way, you look just beautiful in the pictures with Zuul and
the horses. I can’t wait to see you and hug you again.
P.S. When I come, I am going to bring a book on earth ovens - don’t know if it will be too damp there to make it happen, but we can always try.
