if this was 13 yrs ago i’d be telling you how yet again i find myself sitting in a run down hotel in a medium size Central American city writing in my notebook about what i have seen in the streets below. I’d speak about kids drinking Coca-Cola from sandwich bags in front of a tin shack kiosko, tasty papusas on a mountain top, three week brake jobs,controlled substances for days on end at a fascist controlled seaside town or those slow, humid, windows wide open and about to remove the windshield, drives through even more brand new world… but this is now and i am settled in bocas del toro, my wife and young son are sound asleep in our comfortable hotel room and I find myself typing into a lighted box for all the world to read… about renewing immigration papers and hunting for hard to find building materials, about trying so hard to find the fabled commercial landscaper alley where tens of farms run for miles, but instead end up almost stumbling upon possibly the best garden place in Panama - run by the agriculture ministry where tropical fruit trees go for .50 cents a piece and the place is crawling with very peaceful energy and fun for the organic, permaculture gardener.
Even about Chocolat, a worker at the garden center, being a great help, with some fine suggestions that were fully embraced and loaded onto our trailer. About 58 plants and 64 tropical fruit trees later we drive through a severe weather rain storm and arrive back at the hotel in David, Panama to meet some friends for dinner.
And now our emminent departure back to the farm on Dolphin Bay in Bocas del Toro and a return to an unrushed country life by the sea.
